12 Weird Beliefs And Rituals About Menstruation Around The World
Menstruation is a natural bodily function that happens to all women of reproductive age. However, in many cultures around the world, menstruation is still surrounded by taboos and superstitions. This can lead to women being stigmatized and discriminated against during their periods. Here are some weird beliefs about menstruation around the globe:
1. In Philippines, it is believed that when a girl gets her first period she needs to wash her face with the first menstrual blood in order to have clear skin all her life.
2. In some part of South Africa, menstruating girl is separated from others and a goat is slaughtered when a girl gets her first period. The menstruating girl should also cover her head with a blanket and remain hidden till the sunset.
3. When a woman or girl is on her period in India, they are instructed not to touch the pickle jar, not to wash their hair until the fourth day of their cycle, and not to set curd or jams, amongst a few other silly conceptions around periods that are prevalent in India. Apparently this is also believed in large parts of US and UK too.
4. In Israel, when a girl gets her first period, she is slapped hard on her cheeks so that she has ‘beautiful’ red cheeks all her life.

5. In Poland, it is believed that having sex during periods can kill your partner.
6. Romanians believe that menstruating girls and women can not touch flowers because then they die faster.
7. In Afghanistan, there is a widespread cultural belief that during a woman’s menstruation, she should not take a bath or shower since doing so could lead her to become “gazag,” which is the Pashto word for infertile.
8. In Malaysia, there is a belief that the menstruating girl or women should wash the pad before disposing it off otherwise ghosts come and haunt her.
9. In Argentina, menstruating women are not allowed to make whipped cream because they believe that it will curdle.
10. Even in France, it is believed that menstruating women should not make mayonnaise because it curdles if prepared by a menstruating woman.
11. Many Italians believe that a female should not touch plants while menstruating. Also, if a menstruating women cooked anything, it will be a disaster. They believe that if touched by menstruating females, the dough doesn’t rise.
12. In Bolivia it is believed that menstruating women or girls can’t cradle babies because it will make the little ones sick.
