Toyota and Hino motors have jointly developed a bus that is powered by the Toyota Fuel Cell System developed for use in the Toyota Mirai. The testing of this Toyota-Hino fuel cell bus has begun on public roads in the central and waterfront areas of Tokyo city. On the basis of this test, Toyota wants to evaluate and improve the fuel cell technology before a proper market launch.

A fuel cell system consist of two fuel stacks and motors alongside eight high-pressure hydrogen tanks. These hydrogen tanks can store up to 480 l (106 gal) of hydrogen and the system as a whole can produce a maximum power output of 114 kW in each of its units.

To decrease the reliance on burning fossil fuels, many cities around the globe have either begun testing or rolling out buses that don’t use fossil fuels. For example, London and Gothenburg have introduced electric buses in their bus fleets and fuel cell buses have been under testing and trials in Hamburg and north-east China since 2009.
