Come on guys! Don’t tempt the hackers! On seeing the annual list by Tech Security company SplashData on the worst passwords, most of us might laugh. But truth is, it’s most of us that use these passwords in the first place.
Hacking is not a big deal, and while you might think it’s never going to happen to you, you’re making yourself even more vulnerable. Not to mention that shoddy password you just set in four different accounts!
It is really any surprise that “12345” and “password” are still topping the list? This is the second time in a row, we can’t be that creatively challenged!
Other sports related and Star Wars associated words and character names are also right up there. It includes words like “dragon”, “master”, “solo”, “football”, “baseball” and even right out “Star Wars”.
Okay now down to business. An estimated 480 million personal data records were leaked, according to Forbes. This includes major federal data breach at the U.S Office of Personnel Management in July last year, as well as major data hacks on Uber, T-mobile and Ashley Madison.
SplashData says using passwords twelve letters or longer or with mixed characters can reduced the chances of a hacker successfully breaking through. Although, if you use ones like “I love Star Wars”, it’s really no use.
Another tip would be to change your password for every different account. I know it’s tempting to type the one password out you’re so sure of again and again. But, that is like giving away all the keys in the bunch at once.
