No bomb can cross this scanner unnoticed!

Terahertz spectrum examining is possibly the best forsearching bombsbecause of the complete range of materials it can reveal, however it is not practical for baggage checks, Because, for that, you will need both a suitcase-sized machine and about half an hour time to conduct the scan.

MIT researchers havedevelopedaquantum cascade lasersystem, which shall make terahertz detection a reality. Because the laser’s single, tiny frequency comb merely consumes power for very short periods and you can fit it into the size of a chip without a massive cooling unit, which makes it perfect for airport scanners. It takes only 100 microseconds to identify a substance and hence you do not have to wait too long.

You will not see this quantum cascade lasers at security guys anytime soon because of breakthrough cases happening often. Princeton’s Gerard Wysocki defines this as a “great first step” towards terahertz detection rather than the end goal. The technology is relevant for security scanners, where identifying an exotic explosive can save lives, however, it can also help doctors and scientists to find traces of materials, which might otherwise go unnoticed.
