A lot of couples around the globe struggle with the problem of infertility. Their hopes get shattered every month and it stretches to the years that follow. Among various reasons of infertility, low sperm motility appears high on the causes of infertility in men.
Motility is the ability of the sperm to swim fast and reach the egg before other sperms succeed in doing so. So low motility means they are not fast enough to reach the egg and fertilize it, hence the infertility.
But scientists are one great restless race. They accept every problem as a challenge and strive to find a solution to combat this. So this is what researchers in Germany are trying to do. They have found a way to use tiny robots to help sperms swim more quickly and efficiently.
These ‘spermbots’ or ‘spermsuits’ are miniscule metal helixes that are just large enough to completely encircle the tail of a single sperm. These helix suits then propel it towards the egg.
Though the team informed that they controlled these bionic swimmers in a petri dish with the help of a magnetic field and it doesn’t mean the experiment will be as successful in the human body, but it does mean we have another alternative to boost fertility and conception chances of couples eagerly trying for the same.
There is still a lot of work to do even to reach the stage when bionic sperms would be tested in human body, but they are sure that something good may come off it.
