Ever heard “Prevention is better than cure?” What if we could take prevention every time we were to fall ill? But the catch is, we can never anticipate when we are going to catch a disease. If researchers are to be believed, we can. Developed by a consortium of researchers and industry partners from seven European Union countries, Wize Mirror; incorporating 3D scanners, multispectral cameras and gas sensors can assess the health of someone looking into it based on how flushed or pale they look or what are their expressions or by looking at a fatty tissue.

The 3D scanners does the function of analysing face shape to spot weight gain or loss, facial recognition software tries to identify the markers of stress or anxiety, the gas sensors take the samples of the user’s breath searching for compounds that indicate how much he/she drinks or smokes and lastly the multispectral cameras can estimate heart rate or haemoglobin levels. The mirror takes only a minute to analyse the face of the user, after which it produces a score card that tells the user about their current health and displays ways to improve it.

National Research Council of Italy, which coordinates the project, wants to use Wize Mirror to address the most common long-term health issues like heart diseases or diabetes. Though it is encouraging news but it is trickier to use these mirrors in daily routine because of many factors like illumination changes, occlusions and excessive motion. So, Clinical trials of the device will begin next year at three sites in France and Italy, aiming to compare its readings with those from traditional medical devices.
