This father-son duo can easily be claimed the best friends of honey bees. All around the world the technique involved in harvesting of honey is very invasive. According to some studies, honey bees all around the world are in trouble for something called colony collapse disorder. The trend is also worrisome because of the honey they produce and the plants they pollinate. Stuart and Cedar Anderson have set out to change all of that.
This father-son beekeeper team in Australia is working in the direction of making honey harvesting process as least invasive as possible. Their aim is to give weakened and shattered beehives a much-needed break from those disturbing visits from the beekeepers.
In order to achieve the above goal of theirs, the father-son team has created something brilliant- an invention that allows beekeepers to harvest honey from their hives directly without disturbing the bees inside. They have named their innovation as “Flow Hive”.
This invention provides the bees with a partially-completed wall of honeycomb cells that they then complete with their own wax. After the honeybees fill these cells with honey and cap them with wax, the beekeeper can open the other end, allowing the honey to flow out into a tap without even disturbing the bees. Once emptied, the bees reopen the cells and fill them up again.
The invention was lapped up happily by the beekeeper community. The beekeepers were thrilled with the idea of honey flowing through a tap. The idea instantly clicks because not only is it non-intrusive for the bees, it is also easier for the beekeepers because wearing those heavy costumes and helmets in a swarm of bees to extract honey from the honeycombs is certainly a tiresome method. Who wouldn’t love to replace that method with a simple turn of the tap? The video about the invention in detail will go live on 23rd May. Till then the father-son duo are collecting funds. The idea is surely worth a try folks!
