University of Sussex is Planning to build a swimming pool of depth 50m, which would make it the deepest pool yet, after the world’s current deepest pool is the Y-40 diving pool, of depth 42m, in Montegrotto Terme, Italy. This pool would be UK and Europe’s primary marine and space research hub, as it would offer simulation for both deep sea and the outer space.

The aim of the pool is to create the micro gravity and underwater environment found in outer space. This training pool, would be useful for testing human endurance.
Blue Abyss, the developmental partner of Sussex University, highlights the uses of the pool in the fields of: human space flight research, environmental regulation, advanced commercial diving techniques, marine and human physiology research, and the overall advancement of aerospace development.
Managing director of Blue Abyss, John Vickers, said, “All the ingredients are here, the location near to Stansted Airport and the North Sea offshore industry via Harwich; a superb campus site and an excellent research base within the University’s academic departments.”

This pool far undoes NASA’s own training pool of 12m in Houston, Texas, and is approximately two-third of the Niagara falls of 35m.
