The popular open-source operating system Ubuntu, soon gets a mobile version suitable for modern generation Smartphones and pave the path for Ubuntu Smartphone. Canonical – the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced that, soon there will be a mobile version of their popular operating system, Ubuntu Smartphone. It is officially unveiled at the CES show in Las Vegas .

6459606603_2903bc8ea3_bThis free mobile operating system is running on the existing Android kernel and drivers, but does not support Java virtual machine. It supports x86 and ARM processors, and it is intended to utilize the maximum power of the mobile phone.

The popular believe, is that Android is no longer a so called open system. In the form of Ubuntu version for Smartphones, Canonical wants to offer to manufacturers an alternative to Android. Not only that, it is supposed to be a fit for purpose OS for the cheaper models of smart phones.

This will certainly not be the first trip out of the Ubuntu desktop environment – in recent years, Canonical introduced versions of the operating system designed for smart TVs. There is supposed to be another version under development suitable for cloud infrastructure and cloud computing. However, in the last 18 months, Ubuntu was subjected to rigorous R&D for developing better touch controls and better support for touch screens for the desktop version.

9359585409_31ac544961_oBefore the official introduction, “Ubuntu Smartphone” will be available to a small number of users. It will be available for download only for the users of Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus G El-fourth .

Though, the company previously announced that the operating system will be compatible with all Android devices, but it will have to wait until its official launch.

Ubuntu-smartphoneAccording to the company, the main goal of the mobile operating system “Ubuntu” is to woo the developers and enthusiasts who want to engage themselves in the development of aftermarket applications.

Although, it was not known, who the partners will be to offer Ubuntu Smartphones, the company expects the first models to appear in early 2014. This version of the Ubuntu open-source operating system is yet another attempt beyond Sailfish, Bada, Tizen and Firefox to place itself as a viable competitor to Android. Only time can tell, how much successful it will be, in a highly competitive market.
