Difficulty in collection of real time traffic data:
Real time data is always considered expensive given the status of current technology is concerned. This becomes even more costly when it comes to the high speed traffic. Large number of fast moving vehicle make the thing complicated. Data volume, data collection and updating frequency are the main concern here. Data collection system and central analysis and feedback at rapid speed make it unviable in today’s technology scenario.
Technology so far has not yet answered two more vital points:
- Data analysis should tell us about the type of the vehicle that is approaching in the vicinity. This data is important so as to gauge the volume of the vehicle that is crossing us. We will of course not treat a motorcycle and a truck in the similar way. Apart from the volume, type of the vehicle when known helps us to understand the probable maximum speed
- Current technology implementation is limited to the major highways. Real time traffic Data is collected at various nodes on the highway. When it comes to lanes and sub-lanes establishing such nodes becomes very expensive.
To answer all these flaws, a new software has been developed by the researchers of the University of Granada in Spain. The main attraction of this software is to collect traffic data in real time at an inexpensive rate. This low cost solution will help people to navigate to their destination through the quickest route. It is reported to be easy to install and use optimized data transfer. This can work even over a Bluetooth connection. Current systems are costly and can hence be rendered only for main roads in urban areas. They are also unable to recognize the kind of vehicles that they pick up in their database. This software is expected to be useful for smaller secondary roads too as it is relatively cheap and simple to use.
