Are you opening your own blog in WordPress? What does it take to make a good WordPress site? Do you have to take a course or read a library worth of books? The fact is that reading this article will give you the base of knowledge you need to start your new site, so check out the advice below.

Structure:

Pay attention to your footer. The bottom of your page does not just have to be wasted space. Instead, put in an important link or work in a few words about who you are and what you do. You could even use the footer to tell visitors a little more about the site itself.

If you haven’t customized your WordPress sidebar, it could be cluttered with useless items that are doing nothing but confusing your readers. Your sidebar should only contain things you actually want visitors to click on. Navigate to Appearance & Widgets to edit the appearance of your sidebar and remove anything there that doesn’t actually benefit you or your visitors directly.

Make use of a landing page. Instead of coming directly to current posts, users will pass through this landing page first. You can use this for a variety of reasons, whether for promoting a product or promoting yourself. Many themes feature a landing page; however, there are also paid options.

Common but important Features:

Use Google Analytics to keep tabs on who is visiting your site and where they come from. It is important that you know where you are getting visitors from so that you can work harder to bring in more readers. The more you pay attention to your statistics, the bigger your site will become. You have various plugin to display the Google Analytics data. These plugins are not perfect. Manytimes, you get spurious statistics with these plugins. Why not consider putting your own analytics server like PIWIK (www.piwik.org) ?

When looking for a template, look for one that has the basic layout and design that you desire for your site. This way, you would not have to customize it too much in order to give it the look that you want. This will cut down on your site development time. Sometimes, you select a template that is catchy but by this process you may neglect to evaluate the fact that quality of the template is not determined by the visual appeal alone. A template is as good as the coding behind it. Badly coded template drags the site down and takes a long time to load. A simple but fully customizable template like Graphene should be considered as a good template.  I personally attach a lot of importance on selection of template alone.

Social-Media-WordPress-Plugins

Remember that social media is integral to the success of both blogs and websites today, so you should install social networking plugins which allow you to share your content through your accounts. Facebook Connect is one example of an excellent tool to use to repost your content to your Facebook account. Again, these plugins are dime a dozen. You should experiment a bit to find out the best suitable one for you. A poorly coded social plugin spoils the party. It will make your page load slow and will be responsible for the slowness of the site overall.

You no longer have to approve or disapprove comments manually. Try using Akismet (plugin) for this. It is possible for you to receive an email whenever a comment is posted, but unchecking manual approval is the best course of action so that authors need not have their comments approved prior to posting. You won’t be saving any time if you do not.

Is it hard for you to post at scheduled times? Write your posts when you want and set the time when it should be posted. When you open a page for a new posting, you have the option to time the publication. So, write in advance and line up your posts in order to have them published at a regular interval.

Do you have too much going on with the functions in WordPress? Try turning off buttons you don’t use. Just go to SCREEN OPTIONS in the upper portion of the window. Click on this and a drop-down menu will give you the option to turn boxes off.

The only way to learn WordPress is by practicing it. You can sign up for a free account in WordPress.com and start experimenting with its multitude of features. Change images, background color, font sizes, etc. The more you get your hands on it, the more comfortable you will feel about using it.

Let people comment on your posts. This will help foster a community feeling and will allow you to get to know your readers better. Different plugins can help you weed through and figure out which are the “real” comments and which are just spammers.

Your first WordPress plugin install should be Jetpack. The plugin extends the usability of WordPress in a lot of important ways. For instance, it gives you some basic analytics on the main page of the dashboard. It also increases your social media options for your website and adds in contact form options.

You need to make sure that your WordPress blog has some security installed. There are times when your blog may be vulnerable due to technical issues. Hackers love exploiting these weaknesses and wreaking havoc on your site. You can use plugins to prevent this. There are also plugins that can back up your data should anything happen to your site.

Performance of the site :

Minimize the number of WordPress plugins you use. It’s cool and fun to use plugins, but the more you install, the longer it will take your users to load your site. They can slow down things considerably, impacting your search engine rank. Websites that are slow usually don’t rank as highly as sites that are optimized for speed.

Optimization :

If you are doing a WordPress blog for professional or search engine optimization purposes, don’t let WordPress actually host your blog. Put your blog on a different host and then just use the WordPress application there. Blogs at WordPress’ website are sometimes deleted for being too commercial or deemed spammy in content. The bottom-line is, it is always useful (at a later stage) to find out and shift to independent hosting site with a free or commercial provider

Make the most of your titles and your descriptions. Any time you share posts on social media sites a description and title may be required. These are important in terms of good search engine optimization, so don’t just toss out titles and descriptions in a random fashion. Give it some thought and optimize with good keywords.

Before installing WordPress, take some time for education. The more prepared you are, the simpler the process of setting up your page will be. Learn all you can about SEO, good content and using WordPress to your advantage.

Selection of Plugin :

Plugins are plug and play code. Just activate them to get a certain feature but always remember that your original coding (template) may be completely different from plugin coding. and on top of that coding style many not be same in all the plugins. So, there is always a chance of overall site misbehavior by using multiple plugin. Selection of plugin can make or break a site.

Minimize the number of WordPress plugins you use. Remember that your site’s load time increases for every plugin you install. The web site will load more slowly and affect your search engine rank. Websites that run slow get ranked lower by search engines compared to websites optimized for speed

Connect your posts by utilizing internal linking plugins. This provides your readers with additional content to peruse while visiting your site. Plugins like that usually ad links following each blog post, basing that on your tagged posts.

Try to manage your comments. No one wants to look at spam. Don’t let the spam in your blog’s comment sections get out of hand. Try to eliminate spam entirely or, at least, keep it to a minimum. Install a plugin that can cut down on spam. Delete any spam that slips through in your comments. Download Akismet immediately with a fresh WordPress install. Akismet is a plugin for WordPress that basically blocks spam comments as they come in. If you don’t have it installed, you may be inundated with tons of spam. You’ll need to get a free key from the Akismet website to finalize the install.

Now that you have this great advice in mind, your next step is to put it to use. Install WordPress and start to play with all of its features. Once you feel comfortable, publish your site and enjoy your new internet presence! Continue to read articles like this so you can stay on top of new advances
